January 6th: 2017 New Year Hike - Wu Gau Teng to Sam Ah Tsuen to Wu Gau Teng

The Fridayhikers are a group of friends who go hiking for leisure. Depending on the weather and road conditions, the hiking route may be subject to change without prior notice. Participants joining the hikes do so at their own will and at their own risk. They may consider buying their own insurance for better protection. The hike leaders, the organizers and any other participants in the hikes are exonerated from any liabilities and claims as a result of any accidents or losses arising.

Dear Fridayhikers,

To welcome 2017, we will celebrate by going to Sam Ah Tsuen from Wu Gau Teng, and we will have a nice lunch at 福利茶室.  I have called and said about twenty of us will be going for lunch.  I will call again to confirm the menu and the number of people with Mr. Tsang.  As before, he will decide the menu according to what is fresh from the sea that day.  I will request for 泥鯭粥,雞,芋頭扣肉,赤蠔 (subject to availability as this is rare), 大量青菜,薑蛋炒飯,芋頭蕃薯糖水 in addition to whatever seafood is available that day.

We will start the 2+ hour hike from Wu Gau Teng taking the lower road, and after lunch we will return to Wu Gau Teng taking the upper road.  The path is not particularly demanding and the scenery is beautiful.

For those who are taking public transport, please note that the minibus 20R (Special) to Wu Gau Teng departs from Tai Po KCR Station at 9:10 am.  Be there early and queue up.   This is the only available minibus to Wu Gau Teng.

In case you are unable to get on this minibus because it is full, please take the minibus 20C to Tai Mei Tuk.  This runs every 5 to 10 minutes.   Leave a message on WHATAPPS to say that you are going to Tai Mei Tuk so that someone with a car will pick you up.

It will be much appreciated if drivers with available seats can first assemble at Tai Mei Tuk Carpark at around 9:30 am to see if there is a need to pick up passengers from Tai Mei Tuk to Wu Gau Teng.   We will communicate over whatsapps that morning.

The minibus from Wu Gau Teng to Tai Po Station is at 5:15 pm.  If we get there earlier, it will be appreciated if drivers can make an extra run to take hikers to Tai Mei Tuk where public transport is available.

Hiking Date: 15 July 2016, Friday

Hiking Route: Tai Mo Shan Hiking Practice Trail and Family Walk (about 2 hr)
The Hiking Practice Trail is an easy walk located inside the Rotary Park. According to                         "Hiking Practice Trail Information", walking uphill is easier than walking downhill as                          certain skills are required to walk downhill: one may use the footprints along the trail                          to practise the down hill method---zig zag method turning to the right and left                                      alternately.
The Family Walk, mostly paved with pebbles, is also an easy route, located inside                                the Rotary Park. Along the walk are trees such as Taiwan Acacia, Sweet gum and                                 Pine etc, a good place to learn about the common trees in the countryside of Hong                               Kong. On a clear day, one can look across to Tsuen Wan, Tsing Yi and the outlying                               islands.

Meeting Place: Tsuen Wan MTR exit A

Meeting Time: 9:10am (bus will arrive around 9:23am)(kindly note that the next bus would arrive one hour later)

June 24th : HK Island

The Fridayhikers are a group of friends who go hiking for leisure. Depending on the weather and road conditions, the hiking route may be subject to change without prior notice. Participants joining the hikes do so at their own will and at their own risk. They may consider buying their own insurance for better protection. The hike leaders, the organizers and any other participants in the hikes are exonerated from any liabilities and claims as a result of any accidents or losses arising.

Dear Fridayhikers,

This Friday will be very hot and sunny.  As many Fridayhikers are away from HK and many also not hiking in the heat, I anticipate that only a handful will be joining the hike on Friday.  Should less than three Fridayhikers register, the hiking is considered cancelled for safety reason.

Meeting Point:  Wong Nai Chung Reservoir Park

Meeting Time:  9:15 am

Those joining can decide on the route they wish to take.  Some options are as follows:

1)  From the Wong Nai Chung Reservoir Park to Tai Tam taking the Violet Hill Trail.  This is shady in parts and bare in parts.

2)  Wong Nai Chung Gap Road to Jardine's Lookout

3)  Tai Tam Country Trail from Wong Nai Chung Reservoir Park up Voilet Hill back to Parkview, then via Sir Cecil's Ride back to Wong Nai Chung Gap Road

To go to the meeting point, please take buses 6, 61, 76, 41A and get off at the gas station after the tennis courts on Wong Nai Chung Gap Road.

Please do not underestimate the heat and take all precaution.  Bring plenty of water, sun protection, and rain gear.

Should the thunderstorm signal or any of the heavy rainstorm signal be up by 8 am, please consider the hike cancelled and go back to bed.

Have a safe and enjoyable hike !

Participants joining the hikes do so at their own will and at their own risk. They may consider buying their own insurance for better protection. Weather forecast: 28-32 degrees C,   H 70 to 90%, South Force 3,
Sunny Periods and a few Showers

Hiking Date: 17 June 2016, Friday,

Hiking Route: 石崗至馬鞍崗

Starting at Shek Kong Camp (Route Twisk) 雷公田, this hiking trail goes along the
catch-water path, shaded by trees sometimes found on both sides. One can enjoy
the view of the Pat Heung plain and go to the rather small Ching Tam Reservoirs,
Upper and Lower, before reaching the organic farm downhill for lunch at 12.30pm.

($1400 for a table of 10 persons with organic vegetable and hakka chicken & other hakka food).

  (1. Ruth  2. her friend Cecilia WONG,  3. Paulina  4. Gilbert,  5. Jenny MAK,
   6. Canice,  7. Hannah,   8. Christina,    9. SS   and 10. Peter YAU my Public Admin classmate)

As I will be joining 9 other fridayhikers to have lunch at the organic farm, other Fridayhikers may decide whether to go to Ho Pui Reservoir with mini-bus to Yuen Long or to Ma On Kong (about 3.5 hours, 11 km) near the Tai Lam Tunnel Interchange with bus to Yuen Long.

Meeting time : 9am
Meeting Place:  Tai Po Market East Rail, BusTerminal, No, 64k bus.

The reason for having one Meeting Place to start our hike, and not two, at the Tsuen Wan MTR as well, is that bus service at Tsuen Wan for No. 51 on Fridays is on an hourly basis. Bus 64K to start at Tai Po Market Terminus, runs at an interval of 9 minutes.

Reminder: Please bring along water, some snack, hat, umbrella, and mosquito repellent.

June 10th: HKU to Pokfulam Reservoir to Peak

The Fridayhikers are a group of friends who go hiking for leisure. Depending on the weather and road conditions, the hiking route may be subject to change without prior notice. Participants joining the hikes do so at their own will and at their own risk. They may consider buying their own insurance for better protection. The hike leaders, the organizers and any other participants in the hikes are exonerated from any liabilities and claims as a result of any accidents or losses arising.

Dear Fridayhikers,

The forecast for this Friday is for showers and thunderstorm.  Please check the weather before you leave home in the morning.  If the thunderstorm signal or any or any of the heavy rainstorm signal is up by 7:30 am, the hike is automatically cancelled.

The suggested route is to walk up Po Shan Road from VC Lodge (HKU).  At the Fire Station, take the steps up and continue up the Hatton Road.  This road is paved and leads up to the Peak (about half an hour to forty five minutes only, but it is upward all the way).  This road is suitable should it be wet as the road is concrete.  Once up on the Peak, you can take the circular Lugard Road for an additional forty five minutes).

If it is not wet, you may consider walking to Pokfulam Reservoir instead, and from there you can walk up to the Peak.  To go to Pokfulam Reservoir, take the side road on your right when you reach the sign 龍虎山.  After turning into this side road, turn left to go towards Pokfulam Reservoir/Chi Fu. There should be signposts pointing to Chi Fu.  Walk on until you pass Queen Mary Hospital on your right.  Follow this road further on until you come to a point where there is a signpost which points to steps on your right leading down to Pokfulam Reservoir.   You can exit here or you can take a walk around the reservoir and walk up to the Peak coming out opposite the Galleria and bus stop.

There are washroom facilities on Po Shan Road before you reach the Fire Station, and another bigger washroom about fifteen minutes up Hatton Road.  If you walk up to the Peak, there is another washroom near the top of Hatton Road which meets Lugard Road.  If you walk to Pokfulam Reservoir, there is a washroom at the reservoir.

Meeting time:  9:15 am

Meeting place:  Exit A2  (HKU MTR Station)

I shall be away on Friday so will not join the hike.  Please bring enough water, sunshade, raingear and walk safe.  And remember to check the weather.

Next Friday, SS will be arranging the hike and will issue the blog.

Dear Fridayhikers,

It will be Tai Po Kau Nature Reserve for this week's hike.   There are four trails there ranging from 1 hr to 4 hrs.  As the hiking trails are of different lengths, there can be a choice should the weather be unpleasant.

The weather forecast says the weather will become unstable towards the latter part of the week and I'm not sure if that means Friday.  The forecast as at today is still part sun part cloud on Friday with thunderstorms developing later in the day.  So please check the weather before you venture out in the morning.

Meeting time:  9:15 am

Meeting place:  Tai Po Rail Station taxi stand

Those who wish to group and take a taxi to 松仔園, please wait at the taxi stand.  Those who wish to go by themselves please wait at the starting point of Tai Po Kau Nature Reserve.

Should the thunderstorm signal or any of the rainstorm signal be up by 8 am that morning, the hike is automatically cancelled.   Should less than three enrol, the hike is also automatically cancelled.

Please be well prepared for mosquitoes and wear long sleeves and long pants and use mosquito repellent.  You are also reminded to bring plenty of water, sun gear, rain gear with you.

I have a touch of flu so I may not be joining you this week.  Have fun and enjoy the tree filled reserve.

Dear Fridayhikers,

I have chosen Dragon's Back for tomorrow's hike as it is exposed so the path should be dry.  But if it is foggy, we will not be able to appreciate the good view.   Let's hope the showers stay away and there will be a breeze to keep us cool.  The hike will be about 3.5 hours.

Dear Fridayhikers,

I've chosen Chek Keng for tomorrow as it has rained so heavily the past two days and it has been so humid all week that it should be safer to go to Chek Keng as it is more exposed and the path is concrete most of the way.

The weather observatory said today would have some sun but as it is, it is still as humid and foggy as ever.  I hope it dries up in the afternoon.  Anyway, please look at the forecast tonight and tomorrow and if the thunderstorm signal or any of the heavy rainstorm signal be hoistered at 7 am tomorrow morning, the hike is cancelled.  If less than three register for tomorrow's hike, the hike is also automatically cancelled.

Meeting time:  9 am

Meeting place:  Outside MacDonald's at Sai Kung

Please queue for the village bus to Sai Wan Ting when you arrive.  You may try to be there early and use the toilets near the Sai Kung bus terminal.  There are just two primitive toilets at Sai Wan.

Halfway on the hike, we will lunch as usual at the little eatery on the beach.  The hike is estimated to take about 3.5 hours.  We can choose to walk up to Pak Tam Au for the bus or we can call a boat to take us to Wong Shek Pier when we reach the foot of the slope up to Pak Tam Au.

Please bring enough water and snacks, and bring rain gear and sun gear.

Please note that the village bus leaves promptly at 9:15 and the next bus is 11:30.  So you have to be on time for the 9:15 bus.

Meeting Place:  Sai Kung Bus Terminal #94

Meeting Time:  9:20  (Bus leaves at 9:30)

I'm not sure I've taken this route before so I hope some of you can lead the way.

As always, should the thunderstorm signal or any of the heavy rainstorm signal be hoistered at 8 am, count the hike cancelled.  If less than 3 people register for the hike, the hike is also automatically cancelled.

Please bring sufficient water and snacks to sustain you until a late lunch at about 2 pm.  Also bring sun protection and rain gear.

The hike leaders, the organizers and any other participants in the hikes are exonerated from any liabilities and claims as a result of any accidents or losses arising.

Dear Fridayhikers,

I want to take one of my favourite routes before it gets too hot.  Incidentally, the last time we took this route was March 27th 2015.  This starts out on Bride's Pool Road near Wu Gau Teng and finishes at Luk Keng where we can have lunch at the small restaurant.  The walk is about 3.5 hours.  The initial section is uphill but manageable, and then on reaching the fire lookout, it goes downhill to Kuk Po and then a level stretch along Luk Keng, with a short climb up and then down to the waterfront.  The last short stretch to the restaurant and minibus stop is on concrete road without shade.

Please bring plenty of water, snacks, and sunshade and raingear.  It will be warm and humid tomorrow.

We will meet at the junction of Bride's Pool Road and Wu Gau Teng Road at about 9:40 am in case we take different modes of transport.

Meeting place:  Minibus 20R at Tai Po KCR Station

Meeting time:  9 am  (Minibus departs at 9:10 or 9:15 and it is better to be there early and queue as there are always many passengers)

There is always a possibility that we cannot get on the minibus and so the alternative is that we take the more frequent minibus first to Tai Mei Tuk and from there take a taxi to Bride's Pool Road,  or take a taxi directly from Tai Po Station.

Should the thunderstorm signal or any of the heavy rainstorm signals be up by 8 am, or that there are less than three hikers, the hike is automatically cancelled.

The forecast for tomorrow will be cool with rain patches.  It is forecasted to drop to 9 degrees tomorrow morning.  So if you are coming hiking, please bring rain gear and dress in layers for warmth and easy "de-layering".

So it's concrete path for us tomorrow in view of the heavy rain last night and more rain today.  We will go to our old trusted Shing Mun reservoir.  If you want to bring food, please avoid plastic bags as we do not want to attract the monkeys.

Meeting time:  9:15 am

Meeting place:  MTR Tsuen Wan Station Exit B

If any of you should want to go directly to the Pineapple Dam or the minibus stop, you are welcome to do so, but leave a message on our Whatsapps group so we know not to wait at the MTR station for you.

February 26th: 大刀屻 / 嘉道理農場

The Fridayhikers are a group of friends who go hiking for leisure. Depending on the weather and road conditions, the hiking route may be subject to change without prior notice. Participants joining the hikes do so at their own will and at their own risk. They may consider buying their own insurance for better protection. The hike leaders, the organizers and any other participants in the hikes are exonerated from any liabilities and claims as a result of any accidents or losses arising.

Dear Fridayhikers,

Tomorrow's weather should be good for hiking, cool and cloudy.  Louisa had suggested going to Kadoorie Farm earlier in the week as the weather seemed to be humid and wet, but it had cleared up these few days.

So, a dual route planned for Friday and the choice is yours.  Kadoorie Farm or 大刀屻.   Both will start from Kadoorie Farm.  Those who want to hike the 大刀屻 route ( approx. 4 hour ) can follow these instructions from Oasistrek web page:

Meeting time:  9:00  am

Meeting place:  West Rail 錦上路 Station / Tai Po Station
(Take 64K and get off at Kadoorie Farm)

Please note that the 大刀屻 route will be cancelled if less than three hikers opt for it.  Kadoorie Farm, however, is okay even if just one wants to go.

Bring water and snacks, rain gear, sun gear and clothing to keep warm (early morning may still be cool).

Have fun !

By the way, Kadoorie Farm asks for donation of second hand digital cameras and binoculars for use in their South China farms.

Smiley from Millan.Net

Happy New Year Fridayhikers !

As discussed at lunch last Friday, we will go to Violet Hill this Friday in search of 吊鐘花.  We will take the Violet Hill Path from Wong Nai Chong Reservoir Park (240m) and walk to Tsin Shui Wan Au (200m) , then turn left to take the Wilson Trail up to Violet Hill (433m) and then walk down to the Parkview, returning to Wong Nai Chung Reservoir Park.  This is estimated to be a 2+ hr. walk. As this is not a long walk and we can take plenty of rest on the way, let's see if the "semi-retired hikers" can come out and join the New Year hike to work off some extra calories accumulated from all that rich food (as seen from photos posted on facebook).

Should it rain tomorrow, we can take instead, the Tai Tam Reservoir Road and walk down to the Tai Tam Tuk Reservoir and exit at Tai Tam Road.

Meeting place:  Wong Nai Chung Reservoir Park  (outside the kiosk and toilets)

Meeting time:  9:15 am

To go to the meeting place, take any bus which goes along Wong Nai Chung Gap Road (6, 61, 63, 41A, etc.) and get off at the Gas Station after the tennis courts.  For bus routes, please check on the web in case there are recent changes.

Please bring water and snacks, rain gear, sun gear as usual.  Should the heavy rainstorm or thunderstorm signal be up at 8 am, the hike will automatically be cancelled.

See you all !

January 22nd : HKU to Pokfulam Reservoir to Peak

The Fridayhikers are a group of friends who go hiking for leisure. Depending on the weather and road conditions, the hiking route may be subject to change without prior notice. Participants joining the hikes do so at their own will and at their own risk. They may consider buying their own insurance for better protection. The hike leaders, the organizers and any other participants in the hikes are exonerated from any liabilities and claims as a result of any accidents or losses arising.

Dear Fridayhikers,

It will most probably be wet and cold tomorrow.  I've chosen an easy route (we took this route I think in March last year) which is paved and not very exposed.  It has a lot of possibilities as you can extend the route if you should find it too short.

Start at HKU, and walk up University Drive.  As you pass by the new Graduate House walking up, instead of walking on the car road, there is a small opening to your right which leads up to a more pleasant path (parallel to the car road) which leads you up to the VC Lodge.  From there, turn right and walk up Po Shan Road, passing a small public convenience.  Walk further up until you see the Fire Station.  Next to it is a staircase leading up to Hatton Road.  Walk up Hatton Road.  Fifty metres on, there will be another bigger public convenience.  Then walk further up until you come to a large elbow bend with a big sign which says Lung Fu Shan.   At this intersection, leave Hatton Road and take the road on the right.   Then very quickly you have a path in front of you.  Turn left to walk in the direction of Pokfulam Reservoir.   Here, the path will not be cement but will be a hill road.  But it is level and should not be muddy.  Just follow the signs on the way and keep on this path.  You will pass Queen Mary Hospital (on your right).  After passing Queen Mary Hospital, walk on until you come to an intersection with signs.  There should be a sign pointing to the right (steps down) which says Pokfulam Reservoir.  Go down the steps until you come to the reservoir.  Here those who want to leave may turn right and walk down to Pokfulam Road.  If you wish to continue because you have only walked for less than two hours, turn left to walk along the reservoir.  Here there will be another public convenience.  Just walk along to the other end of the reservoir and you come to a road which leads back up to the Peak.  This is an uphill road but very beautiful with shady trees.  This will bring you to the Galleria on the Peak.  Here you can take the bus to Central and Wanchai.   If you like to walk some more, you can go one round taking the circular path before you take the bus down to Wanchai.  You can also take the road next to the Peak Cafe, and walk down Hatton Road back to HKU.     I may not join you this Friday which is the reason for my putting down detailed description of the route.  However, as it is a familiar area for most of you, you will not get lost so feel free to be innovative !  As it will be cold tomorrow, and the starting point is in town and reachable by MTR, I think we can start a bit late.  If you are early, you can have something hot in the canteen to warm up.

Meeting point:  Exit A2  (MTR HKU Station)  HKU level.    After assembling here, I think you have to go down one storey to walk out to University Drive.

Meeting time:  9:15 am

As usual, bring rain gear, sun gear and water and snacks.  If less than three enrol, or if the thunderstorm and heavy rain signal is up by 8 am, the hike is cancelled.

Enjoy your hike !
