Dear Fridayhikers,

This Friday, the route chosen is Tsuen Kam Au to Tai Tong.  There may now be red leaves according to the web.  The walk is paved and the gradient gentle.  It is relatively long (about 3.5  hours +) but should be manageable as tomorrow should be cool.  I hope it remains dry.  The forecast says sunny periods.

The route starts from Tsuen Kam Au, passes 田夫仔and吉慶橋 and ends at Tai Tong.  From there, there is another half an hour's walk from Tai Tong down to Yuen Long centre.  If you are lucky you may be able to catch a taxi.

Bring plenty of water and snacks, sun gear, rain gear.

I decided on West Rail as the meeting place as that is the bus terminus and it is easier to get on the bus there.  Get off at the top of the long slope - Country Park stop.

Dear Fridayhikers,

We will go to Sam Ah Tsuen this week and have a thanksgiving lunch.  I have spoken to Ms. Tsang about lunch for 22 people.  I have requested in addition to seafood (they will decide what is good that morning), lots of vegetables, fried rice with ginger and eggs, chicken, stewed pork with taro, beancurd, and their dessert (taro and sweet potato).  There may not be 泥鯭 for congee this time or  赤蠔, but they will see what we can have instead.  Incidentally, when I asked for fried rice with plenty of ginger and eggs, Ms. Tsang said she remembers our group !

We will first meet up at Tai Mei Tuk Carpark at 9:30 am before driving on to Wu Gau Teng.  There are toilet facilities at Tai Mei Tuk Carpark.   We will aim at starting our hike at around 9:45 to 10 am.

The weather forecast  for Friday is that it will be fine and dry and cool.  Please bring plenty of water, sunscreen and walking stick.

Dear Fridayhikers,

Due to the unstable weather conditions, the proposed boat trip will be postponed until further notice. Next Friday's forecast seems more promising.

Tomorrow's weather will still be unstable with showers and occasional thunderstorm.  So we will take the familiar round-the-reservoir walk at Shing Mun:  the concrete road if it is wet, and the trail around the reservoir if it is dry enough.

Please check the weather before you leave home tomorrow.  If any of the heavy rainstorm warning or the thunderstorm warning is up by 8 am, the hike is automatically cancelled.  If less than four people register for the hike, the hike is also cancelled.

Meeting time:  9:15 am

Meeting place:  Exit B  MTR Tsuen Wan Station

We will then walk to the minibus stop at Shiu Wo Street to take minibus No. 82 to Pineapple Dam.

Please feel free to wait at the minibus stop or at the Pineapple Dam, as you find most convenient.  Just let others know by whatsapp.

Please bring plenty of water, rain gear and sunscreen.

June 9th: Victoria Peak

The Fridayhikers are a group of friends who go hiking for leisure. Depending on the weather and road conditions, the hiking route may be subject to change without prior notice. Participants joining the hikes do so at their own will and at their own risk. They may consider buying their own insurance for better protection. The hike leaders, the organizers and any other participants in the hikes are exonerated from any liabilities and claims as a result of any accidents or losses arising.

Dear Fridayhikers,

I started writing this notice for the Peak.  Then I changed my mind as we seem to take this trail so often and decided to go to Kadoorie Farm.  Then I saw the messages on the phone.  It is to be the Peak then.  One thing in favour is that if it becomes unbearably hot, we can exit any time and almost anywhere.

Routes to consider:

From HKU, walk up Hatton Road, round Lung Fu Shan to Pokfulam Reservoir.  (1.5 hr)
From HKU, walk straight up to the Peak via the Morning Trail (Hatton Road)   (1 hr)
From the Peak (Lugard Road) up Governor's Walk to Mount Austin Park and down to Peak Tram Station (1 hr)
From Pokfulam Reservoir up to the Peak.  (1.25 hr.)
Lugard Road around the Peak (1 hr.)

We can take a combination of the above.

Meeting time:  9:30 am

Meeting place:  The university entrance near the Robert Black College and the University Lodge.  This entrance is at the intersection of Kotewall Road, Hatton Road and Po Shan Road.

Those who come by MTR can exit A2 at HKU Station.  Look for University Drive and walk up University Drive to the top.

Just to make things complicated, there is an alternative but more comfortable way to come up to the meeting place.  Take Exit B1 at Sai Ying Pun MTR Station.  Right outside this exit on the street level is a minibus stop 45A.  This minibus will take you up to our meeting place.  Just tell the driver you want to get off at Hatton Road (克頓道香港大學).

When in trouble, whatsapp.

Please bring enough water, rain gear, sun gear, etc.

Dear Fridayhikers,

I have picked the D10 route from 行山樂 for tomorrow.  It's gentle and shady in parts which should be suitable for a hot Friday.

The route starts from Wanchai Gap Park.  We walk up Middle Gap Road, at the road's end, we turn on to a trail, and then we join Black's Link which takes us back to Wanchai Gap Park.  Depending on how fast we walk, we can stop there or extend the walk.  We can decide to walk down to Aberdeen, or we can walk down to Wanchai or Admiralty via Bowen Road.  The circular route from Wanchai Gap Park to Wanchai Gap Park takes about 3 hours.

This is a description from 頭條日報:

Meeting time:  9:15 am

Meeting place:  Wanchai Gap Park

To go to Wanchai Gap Park, you can take Bus No. 15.  The terminal is at Central Pier 5.  There is a stop at Exchange Square and at Admiralty and it goes along Queen's Road East and Stubbs Road.

Please bring rain gear, sun shade, and plenty of water.  This is an easy walk suitable for all.

Dear Fridayhikers,

It will be humid, cloudy with a bit of rain tomorrow.   This is a route we have taken several times before.  We walk from HKU  VC Lodge, up Po Shan Road , Hatton Road , take the side road at Lung Fu Shan, towards Pokfulam Reservoir, and after going down to Pokfulam Reservoir, we walk up to the Peak.  From there, we can if we want to, walk down to HKU again via Hatton Road, go around the Peak , or take the bus to Wanchai or Central.  If weather is bad, we can exit early at Pokfulam Reservoir without going up the Peak.

The route is part earth and stone, part concrete.   Please bring rain gear, sun gear, walking stick, and water.

Meeting time:  9:15am

Meeting place:  MTR HKU Station Exit A2   or VC Lodge

If you are walking up from the MTR Station, opposite the Graduate House, you can go off the car road to take the parallel pedestrian road under the trees on your right.

Dear Fridayhikers,

Let's take advantage of the good weather now to go to another island - Lamma Island.  I was looking through my records and I found  that we went in 2012 !   Surely we have been there again since 2012!  Maybe some of you know.

The route we will take is from Yung Shue Wan to Sok Ku Wan where we will have seafood lunch as suggested.  The walk is about three hours and the road is mainly paved.  It is a walk suitable for most of us.   There may be some slope and steps but not a lot and not steep.

We will take the ferry to Yung Shue Wan, and take the ferry back to Central from Sok Ku Wan.
The ferry timetable back to Central from Sok Ku Wan is 12:40, 14:35, 16:05.   We will aim at having lunch at noon in case some want to catch the 14:35 ferry.

Meeting time:  9:00 (ferry leaves at 9:10)

Meeting place:  Lamma Island pier (No. 4)

Meeting time:  9:15 am

Meeting place:  Exit B Tsuen Wan MTR Station

Should any of you want to take the minibus by yourself, please whatsapps and assemble at Pineapple Dam.

I cannot join you tomorrow as I have my annual dental checkup.  So enjoy yourselves.  If the weather is good next week, we can consider going to Lamma Island or the Olympic Trail on Lantao.  You may discuss which you prefer.

Dear Fridayhikers,

This is one of my favourite routes.  It starts out on Bride's Pool Road near Wu Gau Teng and finishes at Luk Keng where we can have lunch at the small restaurant.  The walk is about 3.5 hours.  The initial section is uphill but manageable, we can take more stops on the way up.  On reaching the fire lookout, it goes downhill to Kuk Po and then there is a level stretch along Luk Keng, with a short climb up and then down again to the waterfront.  The last short stretch to the restaurant and minibus stop is on concrete road without shade.  Hopefully we can see egrets and other birds.

Please bring plenty of water, snacks, and sunshade and raingear.  It will unfortunately be more humid on Friday.  Temperature should be from 17 - 22.

Meeting place:  Minibus 20R at Tai Po KCR Station  (Get off once the minibus turns onto Wu Gau Teng Road.)

Meeting time:  9 am or earlier  (Minibus departs at 9:10 and it is better to be there early and queue as there are always many passengers)

There is always a possibility that we cannot get on the minibus and so the alternative is that we take the more frequent minibus first to Tai Mei Tuk and from there take a taxi to Bride's Pool Road,  or take a taxi directly from Tai Po Station.

We will meet at the junction of Bride's Pool Road and Wu Gau Teng Road at about 9:40 am in case we take different modes of transport and we will start our walk.  Please note that the phone reception at this location is very poor.    So if you are late, you may not be able to contact those already waiting there.

Should the thunderstorm signal or any of the heavy rainstorm signals be up by 8 am, or that there are less than three hikers, the hike is automatically cancelled.

Dear Fridayhikers,

This is a route planned by Louisa for 1.12.2013.  It is a very comfortable walk with very gentle gradients.  Because of the many side paths, one can exit at many points.  But the red dotted path in the picture captured below is a good reference.  The walk takes about 4 hours.

Meeting Time: Ferry leaves at 9 am.  So assemble outside anytime before nine.
Meeting Place: Pier #5 bound for Cheung Chau, Central, Hong Kong

From Louisa's post:  Below is a map for your quick reference.  Contrary to the dotted route on the map, we'll go clockwise from the ferry pier to 觀音灣, then 小長城 and 南氹灣.  We'll follow the walking trail (but not the vehicular track) to 眾樂園.  Then at 思觀亭, we'll turn right, skip 張保仔洞 and return to the ferry pier via 西灣路.  (Walking to 張保仔洞 may take an additional 45 min.)

Ferry schedule to and back can be found on this link:
http://www.nwff.com.hk/route/get_route.php?id=75852f2a-6be6-49bc-bb7a-e9d31f46b41e&route_id=8

Regular ferries back to HK are at a quarter past  and fast ferries back to HK are at a quarter to the hour.

I am not sure if the cherry blossoms are still blooming.  If they are, we can go and take a look.

Tomorrow should be a fine day but cool in the morning.  Bring water, sun gear, rain gear.  There's plenty to eat on Cheung Chau so it's up to you whether you want to bring snacks.

As I said on whatsapps, this is a walk for all ages and for all knees.  So welcome back hikers who want a leisurely walk .

Dear Fridayhikers,

The first hike in the year of the rooster will be the Luk Wu Country Trail.  Let us see if we will be lucky enough to see the Chinese bell flowers.

The trail is 4.7 km but as it has a 200 m climb, we have to take it slowly.  It is estimated that the walk will be about 3 hours.

Meeting time:  9am

Meeting Place:  Outside MacDonald, Sai Kung 親民街.  We will take the Sai Kung Village Bus 29R which departs at 9:10am .  Please queue when you are there.

Please bring plenty of water, snacks, walking sticks, sun and rain gear.

The hike is automatically cancelled should the thunderstorm or rainstorm signal be up, or if less than three hikers register for the hike.

If it is wet, we may go to Chek Keng instead as slopes may be slippery.

20th January: Lung Mun Country Trail

The Fridayhikers are a group of friends who go hiking for leisure. Depending on the weather and road conditions, the hiking route may be subject to change without prior notice. Participants joining the hikes do so at their own will and at their own risk. They may consider buying their own insurance for better protection. The hike leaders, the organizers and any other participants in the hikes are exonerated from any liabilities and claims as a result of any accidents or losses arising.

Dear Fridayhikers,

We did not take this trail last Friday because of weather so I'm posting the same blog notice again for this Friday.  The Lung Mun Country Trail goes from Chuen Lung to Shing Mun Reservoir Pineapple Dam.  It is 8 km and the hike will take 3.5 + hr.   You can start at either end but the gradient from Shing Mun Reservoir is less steep.

If you start at Pineapple Dam, walk up as usual until you reach "C3410".  Instead of continuing around the reservoir, you take a left turn and you will reach the Chuen Lung Country Trail.   Keep going west and at the end of the trail you will reach Chuen Lung village and come out to 荃錦公路. There you can either take the minibus or KMB 51 back to town.

Meeting time:  9:15 am

Meeting place:  MTR Tsuen Wan Station Exit B

Please bring enough water and snacks, sun gear and rain gear with you.

If less than three register for the hike, it will be automatically cancelled.

Please note also that next Friday will be Chinese New Year's eve and no hiking activity will be arranged.   Hiking will resume the Friday following.

I shall not be able to join the hiking tomorrow so I will see you all in the Year of the Rooster !

13th January 2017: Lung Mun Country Trail

Dear Fridayhikers,

With the New Year coming soon, most of us may be busy.  So I've changed my mind and instead of going to Lantao, I've picked a city route for this Friday.

Please bring water, sunshade, raingear and snacks.

The hike will be automatically cancelled if there is thunderstorm or rainstorm warning, or if less than three hikers register.

If there are only a few hikers, and if you are not sure of the trail, you can always opt to walk around the reservoir instead.

I may not join you tomorrow so have a happy and safe hike !
