March 28th: Hong Kong West to South

The Fridayhikers are a group of friends who go hiking for leisure. Depending on the weather and road conditions, the hiking route may be subject to change without prior notice. Participants joining the hikes do so at their own will and at their own risk. They may consider buying their own insurance for better protection. The hike leaders, the organizers and any other participants in the hikes are exonerated from any liabilities and claims as a result of any accidents or losses arising.

Dear Fridayhikers,

Friday's forecast is for warm, humid, foggy, cloudy weather.  I am planning to take you on a route from HK West to Aberdeen.  We start at Po Shan Road (back entrance of HKU), and then walk towards Aberdeen.  There are a few exit points:  Pokfulam Reservoir, Chi Fu, and then Aberdeen.
The route can be from two hours to three and a half hours.  The gradient is gentle and although there are steps, they are manageable.

Different from last time when we took this route, we will not go up Hatton Road but we will first walk along what is called 碧珊徑 , a small trail which Anson once said he remembered walking on when he was at the university.  This will lead us back to a trail further uphill winding along the hill behind Pokfulam Reservoir, Queen Mary Hospital, Chi Fu and then reaching Peel Rise to Aberdeen.

Meeting point:  Bus 13 terminal (outside VC Lodge  大學校長宿舍)  at the junction of Conduit Road, Hatton Road, Po Shan Road and Kotewall Road.

Meeting time:  9:30 am    (We will start off at 9:30 am)

To reach the meeting point, there are three ways:

Bus no. 13 (For those coming on MTR, one bus stop is behind HK Bank Head Office on Queen's Road Central, another bus stop on D'Agular Street)   Take this to the terminal outside VC Lodge.
Bus no. 13 departs from the terminal at City Hall at 8:42 and 8:56.  It takes a few minutes to reach the bus stops listed above.

Minibus no. 3  (minibus terminal beneath IFC opposite Pier 4)  Get off at VC Lodge.  There may be a long queue in the morning.

Minibus no. 56 or 56 A  (outside Hopewell Centre and along Queen's Road East.  There's a stop outside Pacific Place opposite Admiralty station) Take this to the terminal and then walk up Kotewall Road to VC Lodge.

Bring enough water, snacks, sungear, rain gear, etc.

21st March : Lamma Island

The Fridayhikers are a group of friends who go hiking for leisure. Depending on the weather and road conditions, the hiking route may be subject to change without prior notice. Participants joining the hikes do so at their own will and at their own risk. They may consider buying their own insurance for better protection. The hike leaders, the organizers and any other participants in the hikes are exonerated from any liabilities and claims as a result of any accidents or losses arising.

Dear Fridayhikers,

We are going to Lamma Island this Friday.   As the only suitable ferry to Sok Ku Wan is as early as 8:35am,  I've decided that we start from Yung Shue Wan instead.  From Yung Shue Wan, we will walk to Sok Ku Wan where we can have our lunch and then take the ferry back to Central or to Aberdeen.    This is a familiar route for most of us, of gentle gradient and takes a little more than 2 hours only.  We can make a small detour at the top of the hill to look at the rocks on our way.

At Sok Ku Wan, you can opt to walk on to Mo Tat Wan and back if you need more exercise.  You can also walk up Ling Kok Shan and down.   Please note that the roundabout route Sok Ku Wan - Ling Kok Shan - Mo Tat Wan - Sok Ku Wan needs  2.5 hours.

Meeting time:  9:00 am  (Boat to Yung Shue Wan departs 9:10am)

Meeting place:  Lamma Island Ferry Pier at Central  (Across from IFC)

Please check the ferry timetable for ferries from Sok Ku Wan to HK Island to meet your need.  The time below is for reference only:

To Central from Sok Ku Wan:  12:40    14:35    16:05
To Aberdeen from Sok Ku Wan:  11:45   13.15    15:40

Please bring enough water, snacks, sungear, raingear, etc.  If you are not lunching at Sok Ku Wan, please bring enough snacks to sustain yourself until you return to the city.

14th March : Tsak Yue Wu to Hoi Ha Road via Cheung Sheung Country Trail

The Fridayhikers are a group of friends who go hiking for leisure. Depending on the weather and road conditions, the hiking route may be subject to change without prior notice. Participants joining the hikes do so at their own will and at their own risk. They may consider buying their own insurance for better protection. The hike leaders, the organizers and any other participants in the hikes are exonerated from any liabilities and claims as a result of any accidents or losses arising.

The trail starts at Tsak Yue Wu 鯽魚湖.  We walk towards Lui Ta Shek 雷打石 and we turn right to take the MacLehose Trail to Cheung Sheung 嶂上.  At Cheung Sheung, we take the Cheung Sheung Country Trail and go via Wong Chuk Long 黃竹塱 to Hoi Ha Road 海下路 near Hau Tong Kai 猴塘溪 .   This is an up and down trail estimated to take about 3.5 hours or a little more if Friday is humid.

Meeting time:  8.50 am

Meeting place:  Sai Kung bus stop  No. 94

We can take either minibus no. 7 or bus no. 94 to the starting point.   As previously hikers have been unable to get on the minibus due to limited capacity, we will take the big bus this time.   The big bus departs at 9 am.  If you miss this bus and want to join the hike, the only option is to take a taxi to the starting point of the hike 鯽魚湖 .

Please use the public toilets near the bus stop before you board the bus.   I am not sure if there are toilets at the start of the trail.

Please bring enough water, snacks, rain gear, walking stick, etc.

March 7th: Kadoorie Farm

The Fridayhikers are a group of friends who go hiking for leisure. Depending on the weather and road conditions, the hiking route may be subject to change without prior notice. Participants joining the hikes do so at their own will and at their own risk. They may consider buying their own insurance for better protection. The hike leaders, the organizers and any other participants in the hikes are exonerated from any liabilities and claims as a result of any accidents or losses arising.

Dear Fridayhikers,

In anticipation of drizzly weather, I've chosen Kadoorie Farm for this Friday's walk.  Although the hanging bells are no longer blooming in Kadoorie Farm, there should be camellia and other nice spring flowers.  We will walk up at least to one of the twin peaks.  Hikers who walk fast and want to walk more can go to both peaks before coming down.  There is a cafe in the farm which serves vegetarian food or you can go to Lam Tsuen or Tai Po for lunch as you please.

Walking up and down takes 3 to 3.5 hours.

Meeting place:  Exit C at Kam Sheung Road Station of West Rail

(We will take bus 64K Tai Po bound to the Farm.  Those who are not meeting at the West Rail Station can meet at the ticket office of the farm at 9:30 am)

Meeting time:  9:15 am

There is a washroom at the station BEFORE the turnstiles, and washrooms are available in the Farm.

For other information related to Kadoorie Farm, please check their website which also provides a printable map.

If you are interested in buying vegetables and eggs and other produce, please remember to bring your own shopping bag.

As usual, bring water, snacks, umbrella, sunscreen, etc. for your well-being and comfort.
