3rd March: Lamma Island

The Fridayhikers are a group of friends who go hiking for leisure. Depending on the weather and road conditions, the hiking route may be subject to change without prior notice. Participants joining the hikes do so at their own will and at their own risk. They may consider buying their own insurance for better protection. The hike leaders, the organizers and any other participants in the hikes are exonerated from any liabilities and claims as a result of any accidents or losses arising.

Dear Fridayhikers,

Let's take advantage of the good weather now to go to another island - Lamma Island.  I was looking through my records and I found  that we went in 2012 !   Surely we have been there again since 2012!  Maybe some of you know.

The route we will take is from Yung Shue Wan to Sok Ku Wan where we will have seafood lunch as suggested.  The walk is about three hours and the road is mainly paved.  It is a walk suitable for most of us.   There may be some slope and steps but not a lot and not steep.

We will take the ferry to Yung Shue Wan, and take the ferry back to Central from Sok Ku Wan.
The ferry timetable back to Central from Sok Ku Wan is 12:40, 14:35, 16:05.   We will aim at having lunch at noon in case some want to catch the 14:35 ferry.

Meeting time:  9:00 (ferry leaves at 9:10)

Meeting place:  Lamma Island pier (No. 4)

Bring sun gear, rain gear, plenty of water and some snacks.

If the thunderstorm or heavy rainstorm signal is up, the hike is automatically cancelled.

February 24th: Shing Mun Reservoir

The Fridayhikers are a group of friends who go hiking for leisure. Depending on the weather and road conditions, the hiking route may be subject to change without prior notice. Participants joining the hikes do so at their own will and at their own risk. They may consider buying their own insurance for better protection. Dear Fridayhikers,

Weather forecast for tomorrow is a little rain and cooler weather.   I think it is safer to stay on low land with concrete paving.  So it will be Shing Mun Reservoir walk tomorrow.  You may choose to walk around the reservoir if it is dry, and if it rains, you may want to stay on the concrete road.

Meeting time:  9:15 am

Meeting place:  Exit B Tsuen Wan MTR Station

Should any of you want to take the minibus by yourself, please whatsapps and assemble at Pineapple Dam.

I cannot join you tomorrow as I have my annual dental checkup.  So enjoy yourselves.  If the weather is good next week, we can consider going to Lamma Island or the Olympic Trail on Lantao.  You may discuss which you prefer.

February 17th: Bride's Pool Road to Luk Keng

The Fridayhikers are a group of friends who go hiking for leisure. Depending on the weather and road conditions, the hiking route may be subject to change without prior notice. Participants joining the hikes do so at their own will and at their own risk. They may consider buying their own insurance for better protection. The hike leaders, the organizers and any other participants in the hikes are exonerated from any liabilities and claims as a result of any accidents or losses arising.

Dear Fridayhikers,

This is one of my favourite routes.  It starts out on Bride's Pool Road near Wu Gau Teng and finishes at Luk Keng where we can have lunch at the small restaurant.  The walk is about 3.5 hours.  The initial section is uphill but manageable, we can take more stops on the way up.  On reaching the fire lookout, it goes downhill to Kuk Po and then there is a level stretch along Luk Keng, with a short climb up and then down again to the waterfront.  The last short stretch to the restaurant and minibus stop is on concrete road without shade.  Hopefully we can see egrets and other birds.

Please bring plenty of water, snacks, and sunshade and raingear.  It will unfortunately be more humid on Friday.  Temperature should be from 17 - 22.

Meeting place:  Minibus 20R at Tai Po KCR Station  (Get off once the minibus turns onto Wu Gau Teng Road.)

Meeting time:  9 am or earlier  (Minibus departs at 9:10 and it is better to be there early and queue as there are always many passengers)

There is always a possibility that we cannot get on the minibus and so the alternative is that we take the more frequent minibus first to Tai Mei Tuk and from there take a taxi to Bride's Pool Road,  or take a taxi directly from Tai Po Station.

We will meet at the junction of Bride's Pool Road and Wu Gau Teng Road at about 9:40 am in case we take different modes of transport and we will start our walk.  Please note that the phone reception at this location is very poor.    So if you are late, you may not be able to contact those already waiting there.

Should the thunderstorm signal or any of the heavy rainstorm signals be up by 8 am, or that there are less than three hikers, the hike is automatically cancelled.

10th February: Cheung Chau

Dear Fridayhikers,

This is a route planned by Louisa for 1.12.2013.  It is a very comfortable walk with very gentle gradients.  Because of the many side paths, one can exit at many points.  But the red dotted path in the picture captured below is a good reference.  The walk takes about 4 hours.

Meeting Time: Ferry leaves at 9 am.  So assemble outside anytime before nine.
Meeting Place: Pier #5 bound for Cheung Chau, Central, Hong Kong

From Louisa's post:  Below is a map for your quick reference.  Contrary to the dotted route on the map, we'll go clockwise from the ferry pier to 觀音灣, then 小長城 and 南氹灣.  We'll follow the walking trail (but not the vehicular track) to 眾樂園.  Then at 思觀亭, we'll turn right, skip 張保仔洞 and return to the ferry pier via 西灣路.  (Walking to 張保仔洞 may take an additional 45 min.)

Ferry schedule to and back can be found on this link:
http://www.nwff.com.hk/route/get_route.php?id=75852f2a-6be6-49bc-bb7a-e9d31f46b41e&route_id=8

Regular ferries back to HK are at a quarter past  and fast ferries back to HK are at a quarter to the hour.

I am not sure if the cherry blossoms are still blooming.  If they are, we can go and take a look.

Tomorrow should be a fine day but cool in the morning.  Bring water, sun gear, rain gear.  There's plenty to eat on Cheung Chau so it's up to you whether you want to bring snacks.

As I said on whatsapps, this is a walk for all ages and for all knees.  So welcome back hikers who want a leisurely walk .

February 3rd: Luk Wu Country Trail

The Fridayhikers are a group of friends who go hiking for leisure. Depending on the weather and road conditions, the hiking route may be subject to change without prior notice. Dear Fridayhikers,

The first hike in the year of the rooster will be the Luk Wu Country Trail.  Let us see if we will be lucky enough to see the Chinese bell flowers.

The trail is 4.7 km but as it has a 200 m climb, we have to take it slowly.  It is estimated that the walk will be about 3 hours.

Meeting time:  9am

Meeting Place:  Outside MacDonald, Sai Kung 親民街.  We will take the Sai Kung Village Bus 29R which departs at 9:10am .  Please queue when you are there.

Please bring plenty of water, snacks, walking sticks, sun and rain gear.

The hike is automatically cancelled should the thunderstorm or rainstorm signal be up, or if less than three hikers register for the hike.

If it is wet, we may go to Chek Keng instead as slopes may be slippery.
