June 24th : HK Island

The Fridayhikers are a group of friends who go hiking for leisure. Depending on the weather and road conditions, the hiking route may be subject to change without prior notice. Participants joining the hikes do so at their own will and at their own risk. They may consider buying their own insurance for better protection. The hike leaders, the organizers and any other participants in the hikes are exonerated from any liabilities and claims as a result of any accidents or losses arising.

Dear Fridayhikers,

This Friday will be very hot and sunny.  As many Fridayhikers are away from HK and many also not hiking in the heat, I anticipate that only a handful will be joining the hike on Friday.  Should less than three Fridayhikers register, the hiking is considered cancelled for safety reason.

Meeting Point:  Wong Nai Chung Reservoir Park

Meeting Time:  9:15 am

Those joining can decide on the route they wish to take.  Some options are as follows:

1)  From the Wong Nai Chung Reservoir Park to Tai Tam taking the Violet Hill Trail.  This is shady in parts and bare in parts.

2)  Wong Nai Chung Gap Road to Jardine's Lookout

3)  Tai Tam Country Trail from Wong Nai Chung Reservoir Park up Voilet Hill back to Parkview, then via Sir Cecil's Ride back to Wong Nai Chung Gap Road

To go to the meeting point, please take buses 6, 61, 76, 41A and get off at the gas station after the tennis courts on Wong Nai Chung Gap Road.

Please do not underestimate the heat and take all precaution.  Bring plenty of water, sun protection, and rain gear.

Should the thunderstorm signal or any of the heavy rainstorm signal be up by 8 am, please consider the hike cancelled and go back to bed.

Have a safe and enjoyable hike !

17 June, 2016, Friday: Sek Kong to Ching Tam Reservoir, to Ma On Kong 石崗至馬鞍崗

The Fridayhikers are a group of friends who go hiking for leisure. Depending on the weather and road conditions, the hiking route may be subject to change without prior notice. Participants joining the hikes do so at their own will and at their own risk. They may consider buying their own insurance for better protection. The hike leaders, the organizers and any other participants in the hikes are exonerated from any liabilities and claims as a result of any accidents or losses arising.

Weather forecast: 28-32 degrees C,   H 70 to 90%, South Force 3,
Sunny Periods and a few Showers

Hiking Date: 17 June 2016, Friday,

Hiking Route: 石崗至馬鞍崗

Starting at Shek Kong Camp (Route Twisk) 雷公田, this hiking trail goes along the
catch-water path, shaded by trees sometimes found on both sides. One can enjoy
the view of the Pat Heung plain and go to the rather small Ching Tam Reservoirs,
Upper and Lower, before reaching the organic farm downhill for lunch at 12.30pm.

($1400 for a table of 10 persons with organic vegetable and hakka chicken & other hakka food).

  (1. Ruth  2. her friend Cecilia WONG,  3. Paulina  4. Gilbert,  5. Jenny MAK,
   6. Canice,  7. Hannah,   8. Christina,    9. SS   and 10. Peter YAU my Public Admin classmate)

As I will be joining 9 other fridayhikers to have lunch at the organic farm, other Fridayhikers may decide whether to go to Ho Pui Reservoir with mini-bus to Yuen Long or to Ma On Kong (about 3.5 hours, 11 km) near the Tai Lam Tunnel Interchange with bus to Yuen Long.

Meeting time : 9am
Meeting Place:  Tai Po Market East Rail, BusTerminal, No, 64k bus.

The reason for having one Meeting Place to start our hike, and not two, at the Tsuen Wan MTR as well, is that bus service at Tsuen Wan for No. 51 on Fridays is on an hourly basis. Bus 64K to start at Tai Po Market Terminus, runs at an interval of 9 minutes.

Reminder: Please bring along water, some snack, hat, umbrella, and mosquito repellent.

Cheers,
SS

June 10th: HKU to Pokfulam Reservoir to Peak

The Fridayhikers are a group of friends who go hiking for leisure. Depending on the weather and road conditions, the hiking route may be subject to change without prior notice. Participants joining the hikes do so at their own will and at their own risk. They may consider buying their own insurance for better protection. The hike leaders, the organizers and any other participants in the hikes are exonerated from any liabilities and claims as a result of any accidents or losses arising.

Dear Fridayhikers,

The forecast for this Friday is for showers and thunderstorm.  Please check the weather before you leave home in the morning.  If the thunderstorm signal or any or any of the heavy rainstorm signal is up by 7:30 am, the hike is automatically cancelled.

The suggested route is to walk up Po Shan Road from VC Lodge (HKU).  At the Fire Station, take the steps up and continue up the Hatton Road.  This road is paved and leads up to the Peak (about half an hour to forty five minutes only, but it is upward all the way).  This road is suitable should it be wet as the road is concrete.  Once up on the Peak, you can take the circular Lugard Road for an additional forty five minutes).

If it is not wet, you may consider walking to Pokfulam Reservoir instead, and from there you can walk up to the Peak.  To go to Pokfulam Reservoir, take the side road on your right when you reach the sign 龍虎山.  After turning into this side road, turn left to go towards Pokfulam Reservoir/Chi Fu. There should be signposts pointing to Chi Fu.  Walk on until you pass Queen Mary Hospital on your right.  Follow this road further on until you come to a point where there is a signpost which points to steps on your right leading down to Pokfulam Reservoir.   You can exit here or you can take a walk around the reservoir and walk up to the Peak coming out opposite the Galleria and bus stop.

There are washroom facilities on Po Shan Road before you reach the Fire Station, and another bigger washroom about fifteen minutes up Hatton Road.  If you walk up to the Peak, there is another washroom near the top of Hatton Road which meets Lugard Road.  If you walk to Pokfulam Reservoir, there is a washroom at the reservoir.

Meeting time:  9:15 am

Meeting place:  Exit A2  (HKU MTR Station)

I shall be away on Friday so will not join the hike.  Please bring enough water, sunshade, raingear and walk safe.  And remember to check the weather.

Next Friday, SS will be arranging the hike and will issue the blog.
